Can't sleep with high blood sugar? Is it a dangerous combination

High blood sugar may be related to your insomnia or your lack of sleep, there are many who suffer from diabetes and also have a problematic rest pattern. Sleeplessness may be related to the illness or it may possible that lack of rest is disrupting glucose levels . According to researchers at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Lack of sleep can makes diabetes high blood sugar worst by disrupting the bodies inner clock.

We may not think about it too often but the human body has an inner clock that regulates the sleep pattern, this is important for body repairs, sleeping is one of the ways that the body regulates levels of hormones and proper cell functioning. When the sleep-wake pattern is disrupted it can effect blood sugar levels and cause weight gain. If you cannot sleep well and have high blood sugar your healing hormone melatonin may not be secreted, without the melatonin your body does not repair correctly.

Dr. Mitchell Lazar, a professor of medicine and director of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania stated “We’ve increasingly realized that aspects of our sleep-wake cycle, our behavioral and circadian rhythms are environmental factors that contribute to the risk for diabetes,” Lazar explained. “For example, it’s been shown in many studies that people on shift work(overnight shift) have an increased incidence of diabetes.

Working the overnight shift can make diabetic high blood sugar worst by disrupting your healing hormones that are released at night when you sleep. In addiction, those using fake sweeteners like those in diet sodas do even more damage, aspartame which is in every can or bottle of diet soda stops your melatonin production, this is just one more reason not to drink a diet soda.

Yamada, et al found that aspartic acid inhibited melatonin secretion from the pineal gland.
If you can't sleep and have high blood sugar you are doing serious damage to the cells of the body, these factors all contribute to insulin resistance, the end result being weight gain and blood sugar levels that are dangerous
